Astigmatism is a visual disorder in which the eye cannot properly focus due to misshapen cornea or lens i.e. the cornea, the clear tissue covering the front of the eye is abnormally curved, causing out-of-focus vision.Astigmatism is a condition in which the eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye and it may occur in children and adults. Astigmatism is often associated with myopia i.e. nearsightedness or hyperopia i.e. farsightedness. It may also be caused by an irregularly shaped lens, which is located behind the cornea. Astigmatism can also increase in amount during the growing years.
Symptoms of Astigmatism:of Astigmatism:
Blurred vision
Headaches or eye strain
Difficulty driving at night
Squinting
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is shaped more in an oblong shape than as a spherical shape, which is the normal shape. It is a refractive error which causes blurred or distorted vision and is one of the most common vision problems. It usually occurs when the front surface of the eye, the cornea, is of irregular curvature. However, a small amount of astigmatism is considered normal and does not represent a disease of the eye and this type of astigmatism is extremely common and is frequently present at birth or has its onset during childhood or young adulthood. Thus the irregular shape prevents the light from focusing properly on the back of the eye, the retina. So as a result, a person's vision may be blurred at all distances. Astigmatism is diagnosed by a manual keratometer. It is an instrument which is used to measure the curvature of the cornea. Astigmatism may be corrected with glasses, contact lenses and Refractive Surgery. Eyeglasses are the simplest and safest way to correct astigmatism
