Hyperopia is also known as farsightedness and it is usually inherited. It is a term used to describe the condition of being farsighted.A person with farsightedness has a difficulty in seeing objects close to the eye and this is because, for mildly farsighted people, the lens of the eye has a tendency to accommodate for the refractive error. It is a condition in which the eye becomes too short from front to back, causing the images to focus behind the retina instead of directly on it
Further more severe hyperopia would also cause problems in seeing objects in the distance clearly such as highway signs. People with severe farsightedness can see clearly only objects a great distance away whereas those with mild farsightedness will be able to clearly see objects that are closer. It is usually present at birth and tends to run in families. Hyperopia is the opposite of myopia. As with myopia, hyperopia is a common problem among the population.
Symptoms:
Blurred vision
Difficulty seeing objects up close
Esotropia
Farsightedness is corrected by glasses or contact lenses which changes the way light rays bend into the eyes. Farsightedness is basically a lifelong condition, even though the symptoms are not noticeable during childhood. The degree of hyperopia is measured in diopters. Refractive surgery, such as LASIK, CK, is another option for correcting hyperopia. Surgery also helps to reduce or eliminate your need to wear glasses or contact lenses. Young people with mild hyperopia don’t require corrective lenses or any type of treatment whereas the people who are older or suffering severely farsighted will have a variety of treatment options available to them.
